The subspecies B. m. pumilus is sometimes considered a full species, the Ethiopian Grey Flycatcher (Bradornis pumilus).
It is found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical dry shrubland.
